Brawley Breaks Ground On Chandi Group Project
Saturday, Chandi Group USA, based in the Coachella Valley north of Imperial County, broke ground on a six million dollar construction project that will bring the return of a fast food franchise and a new gas station/convenience store to the Wal-Mart retail area in Brawley.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by the Brawley City Council, state and other area leaders, members of the city’s Chamber of Commerce and more.
The project, when complete, will have a 24-hour AM/PM convenience store and gas station, a fully automated car wash and a Del Taco fast food outlet.
The project will provide several hundred construction jobs along with 100 full and part-time jobs to the city once the businesses are open.
Nachhattar Chandi, who runs the group, who came to the United States from India a number of decades ago and started the Black Gold gas station in Indio, said he expects the facility to bring in roughly $30 million annually.
After State Senator Juan Vargas and Assemblyman Manuel Perez gave Chandi praise for, in the words of Perez, “being a living example of the American dream,” Brawley Mayor George Nava mentioned that he spoke to a class of 4th graders at Phil Swing Elementary about the project.
After mentioning the gas station and the Del Taco, Nava said that the kids were “really excited” about the car wash.
“We want it to be successful, we want more jobs for the community,” Nava said. “Brawley is open for business.”
Chandi Group USA runs several businesses up and down the state. However, this is their first project in the Imperial Valley.
The area surrounding Wal-Mart has received a good deal of attention over the past few weeks, including the opening of the nearby Florentine Collections housing development and the upcoming groundbreaking of the Sun Community Federal Credit Union’s incoming permanent branch today.
Additionally, another fast food outlet is planned for the area. However, a construction date for the facility has not been announced.
