Attention Issues in Children – The Role of Attention “Skills”
Attention issues in children have parents and educators concerned. The ability to attend with focus, clarity, and purpose is a skill everyone needs. Students are particularly in need of good attention skills. They must be able to attend to instructions, focus on the details of assignments, and stay on task until an assignment is completed. Attention abilities are not just behavioral patterns. They are also cognitive skills. Cognitive skills are the underlying mental abilities that enable us to process information, analyze sounds and images, create associations, and yes, attend with purpose and clarity.

There are different kinds of attention that must be exercised if a student is to learn successfully. These are sustained attention, selective attention, and divided attention skills. These skills can be identified, measured, and trained. Strengthening weak attention skills usually results in dramatic improvement in behaviors typically associated with ADD or AD/HD.
