MIAMI -- South Florida's Chick-N-Grill restaurants are going green, becoming the country's first Hispanic-owned fast-food chain to be certified by the national Green Restaurant Association.

The four-restaurant chain installed energy efficient appliances, turned to recycled napkins and compostable containers and added a recycling program. The nonprofit association announced Cuban-American Al Salas' chain made the grade this week.

The Green Restaurant Association was founded in 1990 to shift the industry toward ecological sustainability and is endorsed by the Environmental Defense Fund among other groups.

The association's Web site lists only two other certified chains in Florida. New York has about 45.
