What prompted you to start your own business?

After working for other companies and experiencing layoffs, we decided to do something for ourselves that we would own.

We chose pet care services because it was natural for us. We own two dogs and three cats and love them as if they were our children.

What is your educational and career background?

I have business experience in financial and operations management. Fajardo has experience in warehouse management.

How much research did you do before starting your business?

A lot. After being laid off in September, we looked at a lot of different franchises, and other opportunities.

What were the most helpful sources, including Web sites?

Entreprenuer.com is very helpful, both its online site and its magazine. It profiles and rates franchises and is a great source of information.

When were you the most discouraged?

At first, during our initial franchise research, we were discouraged by how much money most franchises really cost. Fortunately, we found Fetch!, which was in our budget and offers services that were important to us. Since we've opened, we haven't been discouraged; we love the Fetch! system and business model.

What company or individual do you admire?

We admire President Barack Obama and his "Yes we can" slogan. Every small-business owner or entrepreneur should use that as his or her mantra.

What will make your business stand out from competitors?

We are professionals. We are not your neighbor kid, who might forget to feed your dogs or let them out. We are bonded and insured, and we hire only professional animal lovers.

Who is your target client/customer base?

Pet parents who want a safe and comfortable alternative to the trauma and stress on their pets when they travel or are unable, due to work or emergencies, to care for their pets themselves.
