September 2, 2010 - Rosemarie Harnett, CFE, President and Co-Founder of Abrakadoodle children's art and creativity franchise, is looking for inspired leaders. Her methodical, give-and-take franchise development process helps find new franchisees with both leadership skills and the potential for success.

In a recent interview with FranchiseSforSale.com, Hartnett explained why Abrakadoodle franchisees are successful. The unique Abrakadoodle concept, experienced founding team, and thorough qualification process all contribute to a winning system.

What is unique about Abrakadoodle that results in satisfied, profitable franchisees?

We are the first nationwide company to bring a comprehensive, standards-based art education program to children. Not just drawing - but a program that embraces art in its broadest scope!

Franchisees appreciate the multiple revenue streams, including classes, camps, special events and more. The home-based franchise model means there are no real estate or construction costs. Programs are offered as outsourced art programs for private and charter schools, as well as afterschool and early childhood enrichment programs. We continually add new programs, products and initiatives that keep it fresh, imaginative and just right for today's savvy kids and parents.

Abrakadoodle franchisees benefit from one of the strongest management teams in franchising! Mary Rogers, CEO, M.Ed., and I have more combined experience in building successful children's education programs than anyone else in the franchise industry. We have built two educational franchise brands that have delivered programs to more than 2 million children worldwide.

What does your ideal franchise candidate look like?

We look for people that reflect leadership characteristics, strong management skills, and the ability to follow a system. We want people who are committed to children, quality education, and definitely customer service.

Are Franchise Candidates required to have teaching experience?

While a small percentage of our owners have education experience, we don't necessarily look for that, but candidates must love children and truly value education.

Describe the Abrakadoodle franchisee qualification process.

Candidates explore the Abrakadoodle opportunity and become fully educated about our concept through a series of educational webinars. They speak with key personnel that are involved not only in franchise development but also with our curriculum, training and support teams.

Our process also helps the development team determine if the candidate has the necessary skills to represent the brand and be a successful Abrakadoodle franchise owner.

Why is the qualification process so extensive?

We want to be sure that the candidate fully understands the business and has all of his or her questions answered. It also helps us at Abrakadoodle ensure that the candidate meets our requirements and is financially capable to represent the brand successfully.

How should a candidate properly prepare for their conversations with you?

Throughout the process we provide a number of resource materials for the candidates to review so we can generate more thinking on their end.

For example, once we take the candidate through a webinar, we follow up with related content. We want them to thoroughly review the information they receive, share it with their family, and take time to sit back and think about additional questions they may want answered.

How often do you turn down a candidate? What are the reasons?

We do turn down many candidates early in the process. We may find that they don't have enough capital to build the business, or they don't have the necessary management skills or passion for quality education. We try our very best to screen people before they go too far in the process.

Our careful qualification process tells us if the candidate loves children, values quality education, is community oriented and is dedicated to customer service. And they have to be able to follow our system - this is so important in franchising.

Describe the benefits you and your franchisees have experienced from your qualification process.

Our franchise candidates and existing owners feel fortunate to have been awarded an Abrakadoodle franchise. They know we're a solid opportunity and a fun, positive, feel-good business.

By the time they get to the end of the process, candidates wind up not only understanding the business model but also respecting us and the sincere journey we go through together. The right fit means happy and profitable franchisees.

As a Franchisor, I feel very fortunate when I look out in to our franchise system: We have the best franchisees in the world!
